Maggin it

Dan has been in the field of ornamental horticulture for nearly 30 years.

He fell in love with plants in high school working in landscape installation, and retail sales where he started learning how to shape customers’ landscapes.

After earning bachelor's and master's degrees in Plant and Soil Science at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, he joined Home Nursery Inc., one of the Midwest’s largest wholesale producers of ornamental plants. He ran their Research & Development and specialized in pest management, soil, and irrigation management.

After 5 years with Home Nursery he had the opportunity to teach at St. Louis Community College Meramec in the Biology/Horticulture department. As an instructor at Meramec, Dan helped shape our local horticultural industry in many ways.

After 20 years of teaching, Dan decided to get back to the roots of the industry and join the Kirkwood Gardens crew where he can help the retail public. With his knowledge and extensive expertise in the horticultural industry, he is a welcome asset to the company. Dan is excited to help Kirkwood Gardens grow and plant for the future.

When not immersed in his many horticultural tasks, Dan enjoys trail running and hiking in the nature that he loves to teach about.

Dan’s favorite plants (if he had to choose):

  • Favorite Trees – Oaks & Magnolias
  • Favorite Shrub – Junipers
  • Favorite Herbaceous Perennial – Butterfly Bush
